Dr Nico Van VuurenFollowing Nico’s career as General Practitioner, over a period of seven years, he started a more specific career path as a Dental Anaesthetist. This involved the provision of general anaesthesia for dental phobic patients undergoing conservation and oral surgery through the use of mobile anaesthetic equipment and the administration of GA in the dental chair in a number of different surgeries in the UK and Scotland.

Working independently means working with several oral surgeons, dentists and consultant Maxillofacial and Oral surgeons.

Medical Career

Nico’s medical career started in 1984 after gaining his degree and completing a year’s Internship at Rob Ferreira Hospital, Transvaal, South Africa. Compulsory Military Service in 1985 enabled Nico to gain invaluable experience; earning the rank of Lieutenant whilst being responsible for the general health of troops and the evacuation of casualties from the battlefield. Nico became Medical Officer, stationed at a rural hospital in Shongwe.

His responsibilities here were many, actively playing a role in A&E, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedic surgery, paediatrics, general medicine and the administering of general anaesthesia for both routine and emergency procedures.

Master’s Degree in Sedation

2008 saw Nico complete his master’s degree in sedation. His thesis evaluated sedation in children 5-9 years old in dentistry using bolus technique. Nico also works within the aesthetics industry providing Conscious Sedation for cosmetic procedures such as Vaser liposuction and Breast Augmentation.

General Practitioner

On leaving military service Nico became General Practitioner (of his own Practice) in Benoni, Transvaal, South Africa. Seeing up to sixty patients per day saw Nico’s involvement in performing routine minor surgery, tonsillectomies, adenoidectomies and caesarean sections, administration of general anaesthesia for other GP’s and consultant surgical lists and working within the A&E department of the local private hospital.

In 1990 he started administering Total Intravenous Anaesthetics with Propofol continuous infusion pump.
